Suggested Timings (Rough Guide)
If used as a full paper, the recommended total time is 60 minutes, broken down as follows:
English Section:Â 25 minutes, allowing for 5 minutes reading
Verbal Reasoning Section: 15 minutes – Four different question types with four questions of each
Mathematics Section:Â 20 minutes
These timings are not strict, but they give children helpful pacing practice to prepare for real exam conditions.
How to Use the Paper
You can use this paper in two ways:
·      As a full mock exam, with all three sections completed in one timed sitting.
·      By splitting it into individual sections, to target specific subject areas for revision or short assessments.
Breakdown of each paper:
1. English Section
This section builds comprehension, vocabulary and grammar skills through two reading texts:
Fiction extract: The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss – a classic adventure passage testing understanding of character, mood and language.
Poem: The Eagle by Alfred, Lord Tennyson – a concise but powerful poem exploring imagery and poetic devices.
Children answer multiple-choice questions focusing on:
·      Comprehension – questions could include vocabulary, word choice, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and sequence
·      Word meanings and grammar
·      Literary techniques
2. Mathematics Section
This section offers challenging, reasoning-based multiple-choice questions that require problem-solving across topics including:
·      Word problems and multi-step reasoning
·      Fractions, percentages and ratio
·      Algebra and equations
·      Angles, area and number relationships
It encourages pupils to apply their mathematical knowledge in varied and unfamiliar contexts.
3. Verbal Reasoning Section
This section strengthens language-based reasoning skills, with a focus on:
·      Letter and word codes
·      Synonyms and antonyms
·      Sentence completions
·      Word relationships and logical patterns
It supports vocabulary development and flexible thinking.
Parental Guidance Tips
Time each section using the rough timing guide above to build exam pacing skills.
After completion, review the answers together, discussing incorrect responses to reinforce learning.
Use any tricky areas as a focus for future practice in short sessions.
The structure of this paper mirrors the GL Assessment style, making it ideal for both practice and progress checking.
The paper includes two types of answer support:
1. Quick Answer Section – A compact list of all correct multiple-choice answers (A–E) for fast marking. Ideal for checking results quickly after a timed practice.
2. Full Explanations – A detailed answer section explaining the reasoning behind each correct answer. This helps children understand mistakes and supports deeper learning, especially in comprehension, maths reasoning and verbal logic.
