This challenge is led by Sheena Ager, creative writing specialist and author of the Cadwaladr Chronicles/Quests Vocabulary Novels and their supporting workbooks.

This challenge is not about test tricks or clever guessing. It’s about understanding what a word really means, so the whole text starts to make sense.

Many children struggle with comprehension not because they can’t read, but because they misunderstand one or two key words. When that happens, the rest of the passage falls apart.

In this 3-day challenge, we start where comprehension truly begins, which is at the word level.

🧠 Over three focused sessions, children will:

• Learn how to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words using context, structure and surrounding clues

• Explore how word meaning shapes understanding across sentences and entire passages

• Build deeper comprehension by slowing down and interpreting vocabulary accurately

This challenge helps children stop guessing and start understanding. Because when the word makes sense, the text does too.
